Mrs Preston’s Lessons II
Series : Still At Home
Fi has been a long time admirer of the Works of Margaret Preston and she used her image "Banksia in Jug" as a springboard for diving into this world again.
"A second version of the first Mrs Prestons Lessons. I had enjoyed it so much the first time, that when I was tired and just needing to work but not think or make too many decisions I came back to the same subject and repeated it.
This series began life during the pandemic lockdowns. Painting in this style was a particularly relaxing kind of therapy for me during the highs and lows of the pandemic. I found it really difficult to paint in my usual intuitive style where many decisions and kind of relaxed mindset are required and instead started created a load of messy sketches and still life 'designs' in exercise books just to play with Margaret Prestons style and arrangement concept. These tiny ideas called me to scale them up to larger canvas and apply some colour - which I did, painting on cradle board and not requiring framing. The series sort of accidentally grew in number and became a solo exhibition at Linton and Kay Galleries in June 2021, Mostly I made the subjects up from imagined still life arrangements, often drawing my favourite native plants in detail and then simplifying them to make them 'paintable' and to give my own 'style' to them - I sometimes used items from around the house, items that belonged to my mother, grandmother and mother-in-law to hold and communicate ideas that were rushing around my anxious mind. As the idea developed I began to add magpies, my much favoured symbolic bird, to the arrangements and then after around 2 years painting mostly in this way, I felt I had resolved all that I had to say using this style and genre. It was a side project that became a main project, the lockdown now over, I felt I needed another focus and the series 'Wander Out Yonder' has mostly provided this. The time spent creating The Still @ Home Series allowed me to indulge in valuable creative time exploring, experimenting and playing in a new kind of playground - something I am continually grateful for as the series has been much loved and well received body of work and has been used in a variety of formats. I will occasionally revisit the topic, to add to it, as life evolves in the meantime it has taught me that switching focus, problem solving around something completely new and giving myself creative challenges is really stimulating and can bring about totally unexpected and exciting outcomes."
