Black Cockatoo Workshop

Cut. Create. Conserve.

Next dates: Sunday October 25th, held in Margaret River @ Toot Studio. 12.30 - 3pm

Ever looked at a piece of art and thought, I could never do that?

Think again!

Join Fi  for a, hands-on collage workshop inspired by Western Australia's magnificent Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. Using hand-painted papers, simple shapes and a few clever techniques, you'll build your own striking cockatoo artwork—then frame it and take it home, ready to hang.

No drawing skills. No art experience. No pressure to get it perfect.

Just colour, paper, a little creative play and Fi guiding you through the process, step by step.

Your finished artwork is guaranteed to be uniquely yours.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Over 2.5 hours, you'll discover how to:

  • Build an image using hand-painted and cut-paper collage.

  • Play with colour, shape, layering and composition.

  • Use simple techniques and specially prepared materials to create a striking image.

  • Develop your own creative expression within a guided project.

  • Turn your finished collage into a framed artwork, ready to hang at home.

Fi prepares the painted papers and some of the trickier elements in advance, so you can spend less time on preparation and more time enjoying the making.

You'll also get a glimpse into Fi's own collage practice and discover ways to use the process in your future creative adventures.

Every participant works on the same project, but no two finished artworks are alike.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Especially lovely for beginners!

This workshop is perfect if you've always wanted to try making art but aren't sure where to start. It's also a great way for experienced makers to explore collage, loosen up and experiment with a different process.

Come on your own and meet other Cockatoo lovers, or make it an outing with friends, sisters, family or your favourite creative crew.

Many participants arrive convinced they have no artistic ability. They leave surprised by what they've made—and often keen to keep going.

The photographs on this page show artworks created by workshop participants.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE PROCESS

Collage has become an important part of Fi's own painting and illustration practice. She uses cut and painted paper to break subjects down into shapes, explore colour and reconstruct them in her own distinctive way.

In this workshop, she shares that process in a way that's accessible, playful and achievable.

The preparation is done for you where needed, the steps are broken down, and Fi is on hand to help whenever you need it. You'll have room to make your own choices while knowing you have support along the way.

You don't need to arrive with an idea, a plan or confidence in your creative abilities. Curiosity is plenty.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY

“I'm giving Fi top marks for this—I can't believe what she manages to get us all to achieve. No fuss, no stress, everything was taken care of and Fi was there to guide you every step of the way. She's a great artist and a great teacher. A really great activity for my sister and me on our weekend away together.”

ACCESSIBILITY & EXPERIENCE

This is a guided, follow-along workshop designed to make collage accessible to a wide range of people. No previous art experience is necessary.

You'll need to be able to follow instructions in English and have the eyesight and physical dexterity needed to use scissors and glue safely.

We want everyone to have a positive experience. If you have physical access needs or other requirements, please contact us beforehand so we can discuss possible adjustments. Small group sizes allow Fi to provide individual support.
